Why should you be content being a product of your environment when it’s so much more fulfilling to be productive in your environment.

Indego: Are there any local, Black-led cycling groups or initiatives that you’re part of or admire?
Derrick: There are many black cycling groups in Philadelphia. The ones that stood out to me that I admire are the KRT and QRT cycling clubs (Kings and Queens Rides Together).
Indego: How can the larger cycling community better support diversity and inclusion?
Derrick: By creating multi-cultural and multi-generational bike clubs. Free safety and learn-to-ride sessions for youth and adults.
Indego: Have you used cycling to connect with your community?
Derrick: I have used cycling to bring people and communities together by organizing an annual “Pedal For Peace / Bike The Power” rally event, hoping to minimize the plague of violence destroying our communities.

Indego: How can the larger cycling community better support diversity and inclusion?
Dayyan: The cycling community can support diversity and inclusion by promoting representation, increasing accessibility, and creating welcoming spaces for all riders. This can be best done by amplifying diverse voices, providing affordable cycling programs, and advocating for safe infrastructure in underserved areas. Cycling clubs and events should prioritize inclusivity through beginner-friendly rides, anti-discrimination policies, and allyship education. Supporting organizations that uplift marginalized cyclists and fostering a culture of respect will help make cycling a truly diverse and equitable sport for everyone.
Indego: What advice would you give to young Black Philadelphians interested in taking up cycling?
Dayyan: Stay safe and have fun! Cycling is so much more than just a way of working out. It’s a gateway to exploring new places, experiencing the freedom of the open road, and meeting people from all walks of life who share a passion for riding. Whether you’re cruising through city streets, conquering mountain trails, or embarking on long-distance adventures, cycling opens doors to unforgettable experiences. Of course, safety should always come first: wear a properly fitted helmet, use lights and reflective gear for visibility, and follow road or trail etiquette to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride.
Indego: Have you used cycling to connect with your community, such as through group rides or advocacy efforts?
Dayyan: Hell yeah!!! I’ve met so many amazing people through cycling. There’s something special about the way a shared love for riding brings people together. Plus, exploring my community and venturing into new areas never gets old. No matter how many times I’ve ridden the same streets or trails, there’s always a renewed sense of freedom and connection that makes every ride worthwhile.
