As temperatures continue to soar, staying cool and beating the summer heat becomes crucial. Whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or simply exploring the city on two wheels, here are some tips to help you beat the heat and enjoy your Indego experience to the fullest.
1. Drink plenty of fluids before and after your ride
Hydration is key if you’re biking in the summer heat. Try to drink one bottle of water per hour while exercising. Once you get dehydrated it is very difficult for the body to catch up even if you begin to drink.
2. Wear a hat or helmet, sunglasses, and put on sunscreen
Protect your eyes and skin from the sun! Apply sunblock early and give it time to soak into your skin. The recommendation for most products is that you apply at least 15 minutes beforehand.
3. Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours as much as possible
Biking in the early morning or evening is a great way to avoid the baking sun and heat stroke. The sun’s rays are most powerful between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so plan accordingly.
4. Cool off at a pool or sprayground
Philadelphia has over 90 water-based play spaces. These go by different names including spraygrounds, splash pads, and spray parks. Many of these are within the service area and open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
