To help kick off an exciting season of summer rides, the Better Bike Share Partnership team joined “Recovery In Motion: Pedaling Towards Wellness” on May 5th.
This amazing bike ride was sponsored by organizations such as the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services, the Philadelphia Recovery Coalition, and the Strawberry Mansion Community Development Coalition. This ride was inspired by the Annual Walk For Recovery, the mission of which is to celebrate recovery and work to end the stigma surrounding drug and alcohol addiction.
The event started at the Dell Music Center and followed a very beginner- friendly route. Throughout the course of the ride, there were plenty of stops where participants were able to rest and socialize with one another, often shouting lively call and response chants to help motivate themselves and anyone they passed on the streets.
At the event, the speakers made sure to stress that recovery exists on a broad spectrum and that no matter what recovery means to each individual, biking is a good way to connect with your community and your own self.
By incorporating a group ride on Indego as a tool to recovery, the Recovery In Motion event was able to show how biking can be incorporated into people’s wellness milestones.
