We are about to begin the hottest month of the year–August. Between getting ready to go back to school and last minute vacations, everyone is on the move. But don’t let the tempature keep you from enjoying the rest of your summer. Keep reading to find tips and tricks to keep cool and pedaling through the hottest days of the year.
Use Sunscreen
Wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Not only is sunburn unsafe for your skin but it drains your energy, increases your chances of feeling fatigue and dehydrated. No matter what you’re wearing, give yourself a coat of sunscreen from head to toe.
Hydrate & Eat Well
Fuel your body with water and good nutrients throughout the day. Phone apps like Plant Nanny or fitness apps like MyFitnessPal are great ways to track how much water and healthy nutrients you’ve consumed (and need to consume) throughout the day.
Pro tip: Fill a water bottle halfway and freeze it. The oversized ice cube will keep your water cooler much longer.
Pace Yourself
Pace yourself to ensure that you are continuously checking in withyourself on how your body is feeling. If, at any point, you feel nauseous or dizzy find a safe location to pull over and stop immediately. Take a break, listen to your body, and start moving again when ready. Pacing yourself also means giving yourself enough time to get from one location to another.
Dress for the weather
Pack extra clothing! The more lightweight clothing you wear, the better. Avoid overheating by staying away from cotton / heavy clothing and sticking to moisture-wicking clothing. Though cotton is a breathable fabric it has a tendency to stick to your skin when wet. If you want to get really fancy you can invest your money in a cycling kit, or other bike specific clothing.
Whether you’re using Indego to catch Pokemon or riding with friends to grab ice cream, plan ahead to make sure you’re staying cool and playing it safe.
