This April, Indego turns 10 years old! Let’s take a ride down memory lane and celebrate a decade of bike share in Philadelphia as we gear up for our 10th birthday on April 23rd.
Indego bike share launched on April 23, 2015, as a public-private partnership between the City of Philadelphia, Bicycle Transit Systems (our operator handling maintenance, marketing, and customer service), and Independence Blue Cross as our founding sponsor. But the journey started long before that! Seven years of planning and input from 6,000 Philadelphians helped bring Indego to life. Over the past decade 500,000+ riders have embraced Indego as an accessible, affordable, and active way to move through the city on their schedule and at their own pace.
From the very beginning, Indego was built with equity at its core. As a national leader in bike share equity and community engagement, Indego has worked alongside the Better Bike Share Partnership to develop groundbreaking strategies that make bike share more accessible for everyone. These efforts haven’t just shaped Philadelphia, they’ve set the standard for cities across the country.
And What a Ride It’s Been!
Over the past 10 years, Indego has grown far beyond just a bike share system. It has transformed the way Philadelphians get around and has played a key role in building a healthier, more sustainable city. Let’s take a look at some of the incredible milestones we’ve reached together:
- Indego riders have collectively pedaled the equivalent of 40 round trips to the moon!
- In 10 years, Indego riders have burned 804 million calories, that’s the equivalent of over 2.3 million Philly cheesesteaks! That’s enough to give every Philadelphian at least one (wit whiz, of course).
- Instead of burning fuel, Indego riders have saved the same amount of CO₂ as cutting out over 10 million gallons of gasoline. That’s enough gas to fill 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
- Traffic? We Don’t Know Her. Over the past decade, Indego riders have swapped out 2 million car trips - that’s like clearing I-76 of cars for an entire week!

🚲 Join Us On a Group Ride with Wednesday Night Rides
We’re thrilled to team up with Wednesday Night Rides (WNR) for a special 10th birthday group ride on Wednesday, April 30th! The ride kicks off shortly after 7 PM at the Art Museum steps, but we encourage riders to arrive as early as 6:30 PM to mingle and grab some Indego swag.
WNR will lead us on a scenic 8.5-mile ride through West Philly and East Fairmount Park before looping back to the Art Museum.
Free Indego bike registration will open later this month - stay tuned! Otherwise, bring your own bike and join this critical mass ride. Can’t wait to see you there!
